Recognizing Hypocrite and Believer

Recognizing Hypocrite:

And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents. And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allah does not like corruption. And when it is said to him, "Fear Allah," pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.

Surah Al-Baqarah - Chapter: 2, Verse: 204 - 206

In these verses Allah has mentioned those peoples who seemingly offer their word with affectation and their faith and heartiest love for Allah and His Prophet Mohammad ﷺ but behind all these there are their hidden personal goals. In all these actions their purpose is to gain name and fame and to only show that their aim is love for Allah and His Prophet Mohammad ﷺ. When these peoples return from gatherings of believers, they start spreading mischief in the land and start killing others unlawfully and damage the farms of others. They are seemingly trying to hide their faith but Allah knows well secrets of their heart. Like in the first verse of Surah Al-Munafiqun Allah says:

"When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, ‘We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.’ And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars."

Surah Al-Munafiqun - Chapter: 63, Verse: 1

And in Surah an-Nisa verse 108 Allah says:

"They conceal [their evil intentions and deeds] from the people, but they cannot conceal [them] from Allah, and He is with them [in His knowledge] when they spend the night in such as He does not accept of speech. And ever is Allah, of what they do, encompassing."

Surah an-Nisa - Chapter: 4, Verse: 108

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (R.A) has set these meanings that they represent their religion as Islam publicly and make them believe by taking oaths that whatever they are admitting from their tongue is also in their hearts. And if truth is ever told to them to optimize their faith and preach and advise them, they instead of accepting it and understand and follow it, they express more stubbornness and anger and in aggressive opposition they prepare more sins. Allah has made clear for such peoples who represent their faith ostensibly and spread mischief in the land, dislike them and their abode is Hell.

Recognizing Believer:

"And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of Allah. And Allah is kind to [His] servants."

Surah Al-Baqarah - Chapter: 2, Verse: 207

Now in contrary to that, in this verse Allah talk about a believer who spend his wealth, life and everything on the way of Allah and his primary purpose is meant only to gain the pleasure of Allah. For such, Allah will also grant them paradise with His kindness and mercifulness. Like in Surah at-Tawba verse 111 Allah says:

"Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment."

Surah at-Tawba - Chapter: 9, Verse: 111

Ibn `Abbas, Anas, Sa`id bin Musayyib, Abu `Uthman An-Nahdi, `Ikrimah and several other scholars said that this Ayah was revealed about Suhayb bin Sinan Ar-Rumi. When Suhayb became a Muslim in Makkah and intended to migrate (to Al-Madinah), the people (Quraysh) prevented him from migrating with his money. They said that if he forfeits his property, he is free to migrate. He abandoned his money and preferred to migrate, and Allah revealed this Ayah about him. `Umar bin Khattab and several other Companions met Suhayb close to the outskirts of Al-Madinah at Al-Harrah (flat lands with black stones). They said to him, "The trade has indeed been successful.'' He answered them, "You too, may Allah never allow your trade to fail. What is the matter'' `Umar told him that Allah has revealed this Ayah (2:207) about him. It was also reported that Allah's Messenger said, "The trade has been successful, O Suhayb!"

In Saheeh Hadith it’s mentioned:

"Two angels descend every morning. One pray ‘O Allah, grant the honor who spend in your way’ and the other pray ‘Ravage the goods of handfast’."

In another hadith it’s mentioned:

"Human kept saying my money my money, even though your money is only which you have eaten it has been annihilated and which you wore it has been mouldiness, but what you have given in Sadaqa it’s kept remaining. Whatever else is left you will keep it leaving for others."

In Musnad Ahmad it’s stated:

"World is home for those who have no home, world is wealth for those who have no money, who doesn’t have sense will accumulate for the world."
